30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 30 (One Thing You Are Excited For)

Well guys. This is it. Day 30. I can’t believe we made it. One blog a day for thirty day. I’m exhausted. Please don’t cry, crying people make me so uncomfortable, besides, I’ll be back. I might even be back tomorrow. I have a lot of things that I want to write about including some of my theories about the Muppets and the reason the movie Tangled keeps me from getting jobs. Who knows, if you guys are lucky, I might even write about science sometime in the next few weeks.

One Thing You Are Excited For

I did it the other day. I bought my plane tickets. One to Seattle so I can spend two weeks as a Cabin Leader at the summer camp I grew up going to and then from Seattle to England for my grad school program. Can’t you tell that I am excited about those things? I only talk about them ALL THE TIME. I feel like Bilbo Baggins running out the door shouting “I’m going on an adventure!” I am very excited abut those that.

However, I am also very excited for tomorrow. Tomorrow my friend and I are taking the train to Salt Lake City to learn science things. Specifically we’re going to watch a film about super volcanoes. It will be awesome!

Image

I just watched the movie Pompeii the other day and now I am excited to learn about the way volcanoes really behave. It should be very fun.

I would not exactly say that I like science (I’ve always been more the creative type) but there are some things within science that are pretty cool to learn about. Plus, its an evening out and I have to start taking advantage of those things, otherwise I am going to end up bricked into my house having nothing to blog about.

30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 29 (Five Weird Things That You Like)

Image

Five Weird Things That You Like

Coming up with things that are particularly “weird” is proving rather difficult. I like weird things but (at risk of sounding like a true hipster) a lot of those weird things are becoming very mainstream and they just do not seem all that weird anymore. When you start going to things like Comic Con and seeing all the other people who like nerdy things as much as you do  your idea of what is cool and normal starts to skew. Suddenly tons of people like these things and its awesome… So why doesn’t anybody in my church get my Doctor Who jokes?

I’m going to try anyway. Here we go. Five weird things that I like… or enjoy.

1) Mowing the Lawn.

Image

It isn’t just that I do not mind mowing the lawn. I actually kind of enjoy it, especially when I don’t have to bag the grass and can just go around and around until it is finished. I like it because 1) I wear my crop tops and offend my mormon neighbors by showing too much skin and 2) It gives me a lot of time to think about other weird stuff that I like.

The other day I was mowing the lawn and thinking about things. When I stopped to empty the bag I stood by my mother, who was weeding nearby, and announced that Galadriel (from Lord of the Rings) was 6’4″ and the most powerful being in Middle Earth. Those facts alone are good enough reasons that Chris Hemsworth should have been cast as Galadriel.

2) Literary Analysis

Image

That one might be kind of obvious. I went to college for English. Of course I grew into a fondness for literature and literary analysis. I love reading and going into English Major mode on Game of Thrones characters. One of my personal favorites is to use the various theories on Disney movies (unless it is too late for you I do not recommend doing this, it almost ruined The Jungle Book for me). Getting into the real meat of what an author was saying and what it says about the time period is fascinating and I love it.

3) Writing

Image

Yes, writing is hard work. I do not always want to do it. A lot of the time I write something, shove it to the bottom of my harddrive and it never sees the light of day again. Writing a blog post every day has been one of the most challenging things I have done this year (I have a pretty easy life). You should not actually enjoy writing. Some people say that writing is easy because it is sitting at your keyboard and opening a vein. Yeah, opening a vein is easy but it is also painful and I do not want to do it! Then there is the issue that people are actually going to read what I have put into writing and think about it. I know that I spend my time writing and blogging which sounds an awful lot like shouting “pay attention to me” into the void but honestly, sometimes I would prefer to be ignored.

4) Planning Imaginary Vacations

Image

Sometimes, when I’m feeling bored, I go look up flights and destinations and plan imaginary vacations that I will never take. Adventures that I will probably never have. It is okay to dream right?

5) Cosplay

Image

(Costume Play)

I like dressing up as characters and going out into the world to do things. Its fun and in the end aren’t we all secretly geeks in costumes anyway? Think about the reasons you put on what you are wearing today. In a way are you trying to look like a certain thing or idea? Think about it.

30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 28 (Somewhere You’d Like to Move or Visit)

Somewhere You’d Like to Move or Visit

Image

Considering my current life plan I think the answer to this question is obvious. I think that I would enjoy going to live in London for a little while. London has the disadvantage of being expensive and a city but it would be exciting to live there for a little while. However, I think that blogging is a nice chance to dream and going to London is actually happening (I literally have my visa application and a flight booking website open in other tabs right now). So instead I am going to write about 2 other places I would like to visit.

New Zealand

Image

I have seen Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies. I know that place is beautiful and versatile. I also have a friend from school who lives there and loves it. I would love to go see New Zealand in real life.

Iceland

Iceland seems like a pretty cool place. I do not know a lot about it but someday my friend Erin and I are going to go there for a visit and I’ll learn more about it then.

30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 27 (A Quote You Try To Live By)

Image

A Quote You Try To Live By

“Do it until it is easy.”

I do not believe this is an actual quote. If it is I do not know who said it first and am feeling too lazy to go into Google and find out (that is extra lazy seeing as I am typing this on my computer and have several other internet tabs open). Still, it is a good quote and it is something I tell myself often, especially when I’m mowing the lawn.

Mowing the lawn is difficult work. It gets into the 90’s in May around here and we have bushes that are carnivorous around the edges. The worst part about all of this is pushing the lawn mower around the yard in those conditions. I do not mind too much. Mowing the lawn makes me stronger and beautifully tan but it is hard work. So when I mow the lawn and start to complain about pushing the noisy piece of equipment I mutter, “do it until it is easy.” It does not make me feel better.

Do it until it is easy is a good way to live your life. Most things worth doing start out difficult but they get easier. We just have to work at them. We work our muscles until they are stronger and when they are stronger it is suddenly easy.

30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 26 (Things You Dislike About Yourself)

Image

Things You Dislike About Yourself

Why would I dislike something about myself? More importantly, why would I tell the masses what I do not like about myself? Telling people what you do not like about who you are is telling them how to personally destroy you. What you think is bad about yourself automatically becomes the thing people can attack you with. It becomes a weakness and I do not trust most of you enough to share my weaknesses with you (that is, if I had any weaknesses which I obviously do not have).

Image

(I mean look at me, I’m a bombshell.)

Really there is not that much that I do not like about myself. There might be things that others do not like about me but they have the advantage of not having to spend every minute of every day with me. I had better like myself; I’m stuck with me.

That is not to say that there are not things that I could improve upon both physically and personality-wise. I know that I am not perfect.

Image

(but you cannot say that I’m not pretty close to perfection)

Physically:

  • I would not mind if I had better posture, especially when sitting. I slouch too much. I have been working on improving it since I was a teenager but that in no way means that I have good posture… yet.
  • Acne. I am 25 now and I am still waiting for that day when I wake up and magically no longer have acne. I am only now realizing that that day will probably never come.
  • My hair could be a brighter shade of red. I have a lot of red in my hair naturally and every now and again I put brown/red and copper highlights in it but that does not change that most of it is a really dark brown and I have always wanted to be a full redhead.
  • Tighter Abs. I have freakishly strong arms and my legs are… well they are also freakishly strong. My core strength leaves something to be desired. I used to have pretty impressive core strength and very tight abs but that was when I was doing water aerobics and running all the time.

Personality

  • I should be more patient. I am not a patient person. I don’t wait unless I absolutely have to. I am even worse about being patient with people.
  • Better follow-through. I do not always finish the things that I start and it can be a problem (by the way have you guys noticed that it is day 26 and I still haven’t missed one?).
  • Less obsessive. I tend to get really excited about things and really into things really quickly. We’re not just talking nerd-culture. We’re talking sports, writing projects, adventures, etc. I get really excited about things and it exhausts me as well as the people around me. Can I get a little moderation?
  • Nicer. I can be very mean, sarcastic, and hostile at times and it does not help things.

30 Day Blog Challenge Day 25 (Something You’re Currently Worrying About)

Image

Something You Are Currently Worrying About.

Money. I do not know how it came to this but I constantly worry about money. I worry about paying back my student loans. I worry about taking more for grad school. I worry that somehow all of this student debt is going to ruin my future.

Image

The biggest reason I worry about money right now is trying to pay for my student visa, grad school, and my plane ticket. There is no real need for me to go get my masters degree in another country (an expensive country) other than I have the opportunity to and I would like to take advantage of it. Taking advantage of an opportunity requires money, more money than I have. Still I am going to try. I am also going to try to put my energy to better use than just worry.

Recently I have been reading F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Short Autobiography. In one of the essays Fitzgerald refers to worry as “imagination with a leak in it.” He does not put much stock in worry. It certainly does not help anything, it just wastes energy. So here is my list of what I am going to do to get ready for my year far away instead of worrying.

Image

1) Finish applying for my Student Visa

2) Convince People in my Church to let me clean their houses and raise a little money before I go.

3) Buy plane tickets

4) Pay the school

5) Figure out where I want to/will live

6) Get money

When I list is out it does not seem like all that much. It just needs to be done. There is no point worrying about it.

30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 24 (Five Words/Phrases That Make You Laugh)

Image

Five Words/Phrases That Make You Laugh

I have decided to do a little mixing and matching. Some of my favorite things are words but there are a few phrases that are wonderful too.

1) “We have rules here.”

Obviously I know that we have rules here. I have chosen to ignore them. That is not why that phrase makes me laugh. Any time someone tells me that, which is often considering that I am a disruptive influence, I point and shout “rules! We have rules here! See, nobody cares.” I started saying this because I said it to my dad at random one day and decided it was perfect. Sometimes at the end of the phrase I turn to whoever has said it and add “nice hat,” just to continue being funny.

2) Nefarious

I don’t know why but “nefarious” is my very favorite word. It is awesome and always makes me smile.

3) Collywobbles.

I first heard this word in the movie “Brave.” I only just discovered that it means stomach pain and queasiness. I definitely need to use it more often in real life. For describing my least favorite kind of sickness it always makes me happy.

4) (One the topic of Brave) “I don’t want to get married I want to stay single and let my hair flow in the wind as I ride through the glen firing arrows into the sunset.”

I think that one explains itself. If you did not at least smile when you read that then there is no hope for you. This is another one of those phrases that I like to say at random to people for close to no reason.

5) (Explosion Sounds)

Who doesn’t love talking in sound effects? Who doesn’t smile when someone tells them their boat exploded when it is told in sound effects?
