Do something practical with your life

I believe the worst thing we can tell children (and adults at that) is “do something practical with your life.” I’m not saying that when a child says to their parent “I want to be a movie star” that the parent should tell them it’s a wonderful idea and to go ahead and never work on any skill ever in their life. I AM saying that the parent or teacher should tell them to go ahead and work as hard as they possibly can to become one of the best in the world at that thing because if that person knows that nothing “practical” will make them a tenth as happy as struggling to be a great writer, athlete, or actor then they should do that thing. We shouldn’t tell young dreamers that in order to get that dream they don’t have to work harder than anyone else in the world at it but we certainly should not be telling them to do something practical instead. That’s just what I think though.
